Statum BankRank: An Outlook Metric for Small Banks
The future of a bank is not what it used to be. With due apologies to Yogi Berra, it is hard to predict the outlook of a small bank. In the last 4 years we have gone from a doomsday scenario of anticipated bank runs to an environment of high margins and a surfeit of deposits after covid and later into the unchartered waters of rapid rate hikes and actual bank runs before settling into the prevailing uncertainties of interest rates and economic forecasts.
Most small banks don’t like roller coasters. However, some will manage them better than others. Statum BankRank provides an outlook on how a bank will rank compared to all other US banks in coming months by looking at a their past performance on multiple parameters.
Statum BankRank uses six key performance parameters: T1LR (Tier 1 Leverage Ratio), AER (Average Efficiency Ratio), ROA (Return on Assets), ROE (Return on Equity), TCE (Tangible Common Equity), and ROTC (Return on Tangible Common Equity). Unlike traditional approaches, Statum looks at how a bank ranks compared to all other banks. So if market conditions change, it indicates how resilient a bank is compared to others.

How Banks Get Their Ratings and Statum GPA
Each bank's rating is based on the six key performance parameters compared to other banks. Each parameter is rated on a scale from 1 to 9 where A+ is 9 and C- is 1. For example, if a bank's ratings are: T1LR: 8, AER: 7, ROA: 6, ROE: 9, TCE: 7, ROTC: 8, their GPA would be calculated as follows: Total: 8 + 7 + 6 + 9 + 7 + 8 = 45. Statum GPA: 45 / 6 = 7.5. Statum BankRank is a ranking of a bank's Statum GPA compared to all banks in the most recent quarter.
A Statum GPA of 7.5 would be between an A- and an A, indicating good to very good overall performance compared to all banks in the US.
